PC external backup/recording drive "locked"
note added to this post: I just found thread that says go to WORKSPACE and check "R". When we were on studio mac... we did not know about this......so this might be the answer?
PC Vista64; PT 8; I record my new audio tracks directly onto my external backup drive (My BOOK). When I take the drive to friends recording studio (MAC PT8) and he tries to RECORD directly onto the MY BOOK it says "drive locked". He can access and even transfer files from MY BOOK to his mac...... but we're hoping he can record directly onto MY BOOK drive like I do with my pc? Not possible? On my PC I opened MY BOOK preferences so that "anyone everyone" can do "everything anything" (forget the wording) on the MY BOOK drive......... seemingly no restrictions. If it matters..... when I got My Book drive........ I did not format it myself... just plugged it in and started backing up various files to it........ so I don't really know the format of the drive (Fat whatever). Does this matter? thanks in advance from Technically Challenged. |

Re: PC external backup/recording drive "locked"
Most likely, your drive is formatted to NTFS which is Windows proprietary. Macs can read to these drives, but cannot write. That would be your problem. Permissions would not work in this circumstance. If you need to move files from PC to Mac you need a transfer drive that is formatted with FAT32. But, do not use that drive as a recording drive. Only for transfer. Pro Tools no longer supports recording to a FAT32 formatted drive.

Re: PC external backup/recording drive "locked"
Again, if the drive is formatted in NTFS, Mac OSX cannot write to it. Mac can only read from NTFS formatted drives.
In Windows go to Computer Management (run->compmgmt.msc) then click on Disk Management. You will see your drives there, and and under File System it will tell you what your drive is formatted to.
