Default Presonus Digimax

I have just purchased a Presonus Digimax 8 to use as a microphone preamp.
Can I not connect microphones into the Digimax, and then, from there, into the Digi 002R XLR connections?
I am not an audio engineer, but I have been able to get some decent recordings.
I have recently acquired AKG Perception 420 microphones and have read numerous articles stressing the importance of using a decent mic preamp.
I am anxious to start recording with these mics as they do produce a warmer sound than our Audio Technica mics.
Will the preamps in the Digi 002r be all that is needed?
Thanks for all suggestions.....other than the ones suggesting physically impossible activities.

I would recommend using ADAT out of the PreSonus to the ADAT in on the Digi. This should bypass the pre's on the Digi.

+1 to this and all you need is an optical cable. The pres on the PreSonus are a little better than the Digi's IMHO.

Actually, they are night and day better, not even close. Comnpare them and you will see, it's not subtle.

Thanks for the input, is appreciated. Digimax is connected to the 002r via lightpipe now. Once I figured out how to name the input paths, and check the #9 input box, as the first path in the digital sequence, we have been able to record. The Digimax has increased the sensitivity of the AKG 420's tremendously. Now, if we can just produce tracks that are above "turd" level to polish.

Don't forget to set Clock Source to Optical each time you start your system. If you don't, you'll get clicks and pops on the 9 thru 16 inputs.

A little audio 101 to help you in the future; you NEVER want to feed an external preamp into another preamps XLR input(whether its the 002 or any other box). Preamps output a LINE level signal and most XLR inputs on preamps are MIC level inputs, and there's a big difference Now, an XLR input on something like a compressor, is likely a LINE level input(damn those audio folks, using the same connector for different things).

I don't have an 002, so I'm not sure if this is possible, but if it has word clock out, you can set the 002 clock to internal and run word clock to the Digimax. Set the Digimax clock to "word" and you will have both units locked together regardless of what sample rate is set on the 002. Just one less thing to check when setting up a session.

Of course, the Digimax clock may be better than the 002, so it may serve just as well as master clock to the 002 via optical as albee described. Some experimentation may be in order.
