MacBook Pro models for PT11+a 2nd internal drive-no external drive needed
Because there have been a lot of people interested in using PT11 without an external
drive for the audio files on a MacBook Pro I thought I could post all MBP models which would meet the requirements for the use with PT and could be used to install a 2nd internal drive by replacing the optical drive. All these MacBooks Pro have the required i7 Quad Core processor and are powerful enough to run PT11 successfully. Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2012 i7 Quad Core 2,3GHz 2,6GHz 2,7GHz with the model ID 9,1 http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac...=MacBookPro9,1 Macbook Pro 17" Late 2011 i7 Quad Core 2,4GHz 2,5GHz Macbook Pro 17" Early 2011 i7 Quad Core 2,2GHz 2,3GHz with the model ID 8,3 http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac...acBookPro8%2C3 Macbook Pro 15" Late 2011 i7 Quad Core 2,2GHz 2,4GHz 2,5GHz Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011 i7 Quad Core 2,0GHz 2,2GHz 2,3GHz with the model ID 8,2 http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac...acBookPro8%2C2 You also would want to put in all 16GB Ram. http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-12...B83JWCRDZ22A2Z You further would have to replace the original HDDs of these MacBooks with faster drives too, the original ones are too slow actually. You would want to use SSDs instead (because of the lower power consumption when using 2 drives in a MacBook, HDDs would suck too much battery). The most affordable yet usable combination of drives would be 1 Samsung Evo 250GB for the OS drive ($130.-) 1 Samsung Evo 500GB or 1TB for the 2nd audio drive ($240.-/$430.-) + 1 adapter for the replaced drive ($35.-) http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electr...amsung+840+Evo http://www.amazon.com/Doubler-Conver...s=Data+Doubler The definitely best as to quality, speed and lifetime would be 1 Samsung 850 Pro 256GB for the OS drive ($200.-) 1 Samsung 850 Pro 500GB/1TB for the 2nd audio drive ($360/$700.-) + 1 adapter for the replaced drive ($35.-) http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electr...amsung+850+pro http://www.amazon.com/Doubler-Conver...s=Data+Doubler Maybe this will be useful for one or the other. All the best everybody, VRW MacMini i7Quad, 16GB Ram, MBP Mid 2012 2,5GHz i5, 16GB Ram, MacOS 10.9.5, Apogee Quartet+Duet 2, Genelec Active, Yamaha NS10, Pro Tools 11.2.1, Logic 10.0.7, Waves, MCDSP, Duende Native, Softube, HOFA, IK Multimedia, NI etc. |

Re: MacBook Pro models for PT11+a 2nd internal drive-no external drive needed
Very useful post.
to those with older laptops- I wanted to add that I have a similar setup on a mid 2009 MBP 2.8 ghz Core 2 Duo processor maxed out with 8gb ram and PT 11 runs very well on it even though it does not meet any official requirements. PT 11 definitely runs much better than PT10 ever has on that same laptop. Oh I have osx 10.8.5. Wd Scorpio Black 500gb Audio Drive in the optical bay. |
