Default sync PTF to external HD recorder

I am wondering if I can sync my VS-840 HD recorder to PT Free as either slave or master via MIDI so I can have 16 tracks?
Also w/o hardware support there is no digital in/out so I am wondering about latency?
Is MMC the right protocol or MTC? So far the manual is silent on the subject and the options are disabled in the transport window. I'm not sure if this is even feasible with PT Free. Can anyone tell me if this is possible?
I'm jazzed with PT Free so far but I want to know what features are missing that might make me buy the Digi001?
