older i7
hi all,
actually, everything works quite well... just wondering how under-powered my lap top is for anything approaching a full session with a few plugs... about a 7 year old DELL running W10, with an i7 processor... but it's prob a first generation i7... hard to find info directly related to DAWS that discusses the relative power of the processors... any ideas or experience with this? I was able to simultaneously record 8 tracks via a Scarlett 18i20 with not too much issue. |

Re: older i7
It would help to have the full specs. but depending on what you want to do you might be fine. Here are the requirements - http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...m-Requirements It will depend greatly on the VI's you're planning to use, and how many instances, along with other track counts etc.

Re: older i7
And adding RAM might give a simple boost. My first i7 machine(socket 1366) runs great with PT10, but was dragging with PT12. Swapping 12GB of RAM for 48GB made a big improvement. I doubt your laptop can handle that much RAM, but if you are at 4GB now, going to 8(or 16)GB could make a big difference. Also, if you are running a typical 5400 rpm laptop system drive, updating that to a good SSD would give a lot better feel(Samsung 850 EVO is a great choice. 840 EVO is very close. 850 Pro is probably the best choice but can be expensive).

Re: older i7
Assuming it's a first generation 920 4core, the modern equivalent is way over twice as powerful in terms of Pro Tools Benchmarking.
Do either of the tests from the post below and I can give you pretty solid numbers on the difference. I would also need your PT version and interface. http://www.pro-tools-pc.com/performa...ing-pro-tools/

Re: older i7
Look in Control Panel\System and Security\System for your cpu
I've an HP DV6 2106ea 1st generation i7 - CPU is the Intel Core i7-720QM. |

Re: older i7
the cpu shouldnt be the culprit , at least if it is a 4 core , most problems are RAM and
outdated Graphics components in theese Laptops ... if not using very cpu-heavy plugins (NI GuitarRig f.e.)or instruments it should work fine if you have enough RAM , ssd pretty recommended. Of course modern i7 are a lot faster , point is if you need THAT MUCH faster which is not that much.... , if you compare REAL Sessions on different i7 systems with the same amount of RAM , the difference is not that much and in most cases the old i7 is sufficient. Mostly the bottleneck is anywhere else.

Re: older i7
Thanks for the observations, shows a real understanding of how these things work. Also explains why my old box still performs certain tasks really well and others not so much.
