No more HD Native PCIe card?

My 2 cents; go ahead and grab the PCIe card, either from a dealer with stock, or from the second-hand market and use it in your Mac Pro 5,1. You'll get plenty of life and when the time comes to retire the old tower, stick the PCIe card in a Thunderbolt chassis and keep using it

PCIe isn't obsolete

Thunderbolt is built on the PCIe structure of lanes. It is meant for external devices.

PCIe slots never went away in the PC world, they're actually useful and modular, and since 2012, the PCIe is still here.. firewire is defo dead!

I wonder how modular the Mac Pro 2019 will be?

I guess it will be "modular" with proprietary parts or connectors or both. I doubt Apple will give us the freedom to spend our money elsewhere to beef up the machine. Happy to be proven wrong though.

With rumors that Apple is going to ditch Intel and go with their own processors, plus recent support for external graphics cards, it wouldn't surprise me if Apple wanted to keep the new Pro a closed system. Heck, Apple doesn't even support a system if you install your own memory. It would be nice, but I don't have much hope for a truely user upgradeable system.

The time tables don't mesh up.

The new proprietary chips are to come out on the lowest level laptops first. There's going to be a period of time with two architectures supported. If they stick to their revised plan, the new Mac Pro will be out way before the new processors will be available for a "power" system. And from a selling standpoint it makes sense since the laptops followed by the iMac are their highest sellers. Plus the ARM architecture excels in low power/heat dissipation usage like laptops and slim cabinet iMacs.

Apple virtually lost the video industry by eliminating PCI-E. I'm sure their new Mac Pros will probably include PCI-E.
