Unhappy Application has stopped working...grrrr

Guys, I am a newby here and I could really use your advice. I upgraded from LE 7.0.4 to 8.0 and then I downloaded updates til 8.0.3. For whatever reason, I uninstalled and then re-installed my software, hoping that that would solve the increasing time the application was taking to upload. After I unstalled my program, I noticed the 8.0.4 update so I downloaded it as well. and...that was it: now I have no pro tools at all... the only message I get after clicking on the desktop icon is that the application does not work. My OS is Windows Vista. Please let me know what can I do to solve this issue. Do I need to run the SANDRA thing? (I still need to figure out how to do that)... Gracias in advance!!!!

Did you install the Dual Core Optimizer?

Quote:
AMD Desktop Processors
The AMD processors listed below were used by Beta Sites during Pro Tools 8.0 development. They were not tested by Digidesign Engineering but are considered compatible with Pro Tools LE 8.0 for Windows:

AMD Athlon™ 64

AMD Athlon™ 64 FX

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core

AMD Opteron™

Notes:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core requires the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer

Pro Tools 8 uses certain SSE instructions for drawing and other performance critical code. We have found that some older models of AMD chips from the Athlon 64 X2 (Athlon X2, AMD K9) family do not support specific SSE instructions used by Pro Tools, even though they claim to be SSE compliant. On these AMD computers, Pro Tools 8 will not launch. Unfortunately, this issue is not something we think can be fixed on our end, given the amount of custom recoding and testing that would be required. Current AMD chips and those manufactured in the last few years do support these SSE instructions.

Although not tested, there have been reports of incompatibility from some users with Pro Tools and motherboards with the NVIDIA nForce 405, nForce 410, and nForce 430 graphics chipsets:
NVIDEA Motherboard GPU Technical Specifications

Not Compatible:

AMD Sempron processors

AMD K7, K6, K6-2, or K6-III processors

Motherboards containing SiS (Silicon Integrated Systems) chipsets

Your drives are pretty slow, not only are they only 5400 RPM, which is not approved, but they are only SATA150 and 8MB cache.

The WD MyBook is NOT approved to be used with PT8 since it is a USB drive. I have a couple Mybooks, but I use the E-Sata port, so if yours has an E-Sata port use that or the Firewire at least, USB is NOT approved for PT8.

IMPORTANT! You MUST use a secondary hard drive (not your main OS drive) for recording and playback of audio in Pro Tools.

Recording or playback from the OS (Operating System) drive is known to be problematic and the cause of many different error types. If you are using your system drive and encountering errors, the first thing you should do is get a compatible drive.

USB drives are not supported and are known to be problematic, so please do not use them with Pro Tools. If you're recording or playing back from a USB drive and are getting errors in Pro Tools, please switch to using a compatible external firewire drive or internal SATA/ATA/IDE drive and disconnect the USB drive.

Pro Tools supports recording and playback to a secondary drive that meets the following requirements:

7200 rpm or faster
9ms seek time or faster

Firewire drives must have the Oxford 911 (FW400 port), Oxford 912 (FW400 & FW800 ports) or Oxford 924 (FW800 ports) Bridge chip. USB drives are not supported and are known to be problematic.
Just note, you do not HAVE to use an EXTERNAL hard drive, it can be an internal as well, many people see all the specs for Firewire, and think only firewire drives can be used to record to. If you go external, e-sata is #1

But Internal is almost always better.

While "I" have never had a problem leaving wireless ON, Avid suggests you turn wireless OFF before launching PT.

Did you do the Vista Optimizations?

You may have mismatched software and driver so PT is broken. I'd uninstall/reinstall carefully.
Mike.

Thank you all for your answers. My computer literacy is not even at a beginners’' level, but I think most of you agree that I my computer is too slow, does not have enough memory and my external drive (MyBook) is not supported. I'm thinking about getting a new machine with Windows 7, (desktop) so I have a few questions:

1. I am planing to have it custom-built: any suggestions (like a check list) I can give to the store? I read somewhere that PT 8 supports Windows 7, but some optimizations are needed, and I rather have them doing it for me!

2. I assume I should be able to install PT 8 using the DVD I got when I upgraded form PT 7.04, and then I will need to get the latest update. am I wrong? do I nedd to purchase "replacement DVD"'s or something?

2. Will I be able to use my external drive? I have a lot of stuff o that little thing, and I never had any problems til now. Could I ask the manufactures to include the E-Sata port, so I can still use it?

3. I got the ignition pack (with an iLock included) when I first got my PT LE 7.04. I think I activated all the licenses and everything but I never used any of them. Do I still have access to ableton etc... with PT 8?

Thanks again for your help...

1. If you are going to get a new computer, I would highly recommend you read this thread; It is for computers based around the i7 processor. This is proving to be the benchmark for PC's running PT9, but would work equally well with PT8.

http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=238426

It is long but worth the read as it contains all the information you need to know about the best computer specs. Make sure you don't just read the beginning because the specs change a little as time went by while the thread was being written. It has the optimizations mostly for PT9 but optimizations for PT8 are on the Avid website and if I remember correctly in the PDF user guide on the installation disk.

2. Yes you can use the PT7 > PT8 DVD you already have and then install updates on new system

3. When you activated ignition pack, did you download the licence onto your iLok? If you didn't, you'll need to go here;

https://www.ilok.com/cgi-bin/WebObje...okManager.woa/

You may want to have a little better understanding of how the iLok/Authorization process system works before you do anything so check Avid website or the DUC for details. If you haven't already got one, create an Avid Account and an iLok account before proceeding.

Hope this helps to get you on your way.
