Default MIDI note length of zero

In the quest for new music ideas I downloaded some MIDI files from the net. What I've run into are every once in a while there are notes with a MIDI length of zero and also a MIDI note of the proper length at the same time stamp. The double notes thing gives the effect of choking off the note of the proper length. Easy enough to cure by splitting notes but still.......

Any idea of what could cause this so I could let the person know I downloaded the files from about a possible remedy?
