Clicks and Pops

I have a new PT 10.1.2 installed on Win 7 64 bit prof. Everything seems to work fine, except when record is enabled, and prior to starting to record I get random snaps and pops spaced about 5 to 10 seconds apart. They show in the vu meter, and are disturbing. I thought it was static, but it happens when nothing is plugged into the Mbox 3 and also when a guitar is plugged in. And when no one is touching anything. No difference.
Cell phones off. No internet connected. No wireless LAN card installed. If I record, I don't hear any pops or snaps, and there are none on the recording, and none on playback.
But while record enabled, it occurs. I have changed every setting in the playback engine and maybe it changed things a bit, but did not eliminate the problem. The clock is set to internal. System is optimized.
Does anyone have any idea what to do about this ??
