Default Possible to import volume automation from OMF?

I have a client who delivered an OMF that I thought was corrupt due to all of the 'bad' (ie. sporadically placed, seemingly random and bizarre) audio regions in the session. Turns out his editor does not delete or mute old audio regions when making cut changes. Instead, he merely drags the volume of the old tracks to zero. Good for him, nightmare for me!

Whenever I import an OMF the volume of all tracks/regions is leveled at zero. As far as I know, Pro Tools does not import volume data from an OMF 2.0 that has been exported from Final Cut Pro. Am I wrong on this?

When I contacted the post super and told him I needed them to delete or mute the unused audio files in each session before creating the OMF, my suggestion was met with resistance. I want to be 100% sure that I am unable to read the volume automation from the Final Cut session before pressing this matter further.

Thanks for info/confirmation on this.

You are correct. It will interpret volume info in OMFs from the Avid, but not FCP

we have had a lot of trouble importing volume automation from avids. there were a lot of errors. apparently this is a known problem.

i should write automatic duck to see if they'll make a version for avid to pt.

The problem starts when the AVID editor uses key-frames (rubber-banding) AND clip-volumes at the same time. Since PT doesn´t know clip-based volumes it leads to misinterpretations in PT. The only solution is to ask the editor to either use clip-volumes OR key-frames. Either one on it´s own is read without problems by PT. Both in combinations is bad.

Frank.
