sync to ltc with mtp av
I know 001 will sync to ltc via a motu DTP's external spdif word clock & mtc, but rather than using a Dtp for sync & a seperate box for midi outs (for sound modules) is the sync acceptable when just using a smpte to midi box such as a mtp av.(without word clock)
I hope this makes sense to someone!! |

Re: sync to ltc with mtp av

With just a SMPTE>MTC box and no word clock, you will only be able to get "trigger sync." This means that the two systems will start at the exact same time, but after that they will be running on their own clocks and will drift as time goes on. Even though the MTC is continuing to be sent, PT will not attempt to continuously re-sync itself--this is a very CPU intensive task and can have adverse affects on audio quality. In order to maintain long-term sync, PT needs a dedicated clock to resolve to--in the case of the 001 the two choices are SPDIF or ADAT Optical. The DTP will take incoming LTC and "create" a word clock from it, which it then sends to the 001 via the SPDIF inputs. So you do need that word clock for long-term sync. Ted Digi Product Specialist |

Re: sync to ltc with mtp av
Thanks Ted,
If I run the DTP for sync & another box for all my midi modules( such as a midi time piece) what is the best way to set them up & what type will I need to buy(usb?) to run with a B&W G3 400? Thanks again in advance! |

Re: sync to ltc with mtp av
Your best bet is to get a gPort from Griffin Technologies. This is a small device that converts the internal modem inside the G3 into a serial port. Then you can plug a MIDI interface into the serial port. We've determined that you get better MIDI performance with a gPort than you get with a USB MIDI interface.
The gPort retails for around $49--check out www.GriffinTechnology.com for more info... Ted |

Re: sync to ltc with mtp av
Does the the LE 5.0 have to be set to receive SPDIF clock from the DTP in order to resolve to incoming code? Right now I have the DTP receiving LTC & sending MTC & SPDIF to the OO1 interface
ALso will LE sync to timecode without having to start back at the top of your song. I seem to be able to lock it fine from the top, but when I start the code on the middle it will chase but wont resolve to the correct spot |

Re: sync to ltc with mtp av
Yes, you need to set the 001's sync source to "SPDIF" in the Session Setup window if you want the 001 to get it's clock from the SPDIF input. It sounds like all your connections are correct since you're getting lock from the beginning of the song.
However, it should be able to sync up from any point on the song. When you try it from the middle of the song, does PT start playing at the wrong timecode location, or does it not play at all? Ted |

Re: sync to ltc with mtp av
From the middle Pt does play from the wrong Tc location and as you start it from a farther location, the further off it is.
Also when i set to spdif pt says "A clock souce cant be detected from the selected ext synce input, then when I click okay it says that the external souce is now valid & keeps going back & fourth between the two messages. My DTP is set to receive smpte & it should output all forms of sync(including spddif) |

Re: sync to ltc with mtp av
Ted,
I just can't seem to be able to get 5.0 to like the spdif clock from the DTP, I've tried different spdif cables. Also my Dtp is only connected to the 001 with midi, should I bypass the 001 & connect directly to the B&W G3 with a serial adapter? Thanks Ted |

Re: sync to ltc with mtp av
is there any advantage to having an actual word clock output like the 882 does as oppossed to using the spdi on the 001? Are there any disadvantages to using spdif as a word clock?
thank you... lacrimal |

I'd say if you had an actual BNC word clock connection as on 888's & 882's it would be more ideal because more boxes out there only have that kind of connection as opposed to the DTP being the only one I know to have a spdif word clock. unfortunately the 001 only has a spdif so your stuck with a DTP. As far as the 001 & LE, I just found out it has a software bug which wont let it recognize spdif word clock, so right now we can't sync to word clock with the 001 like you can with an Audiomedia 3 card until Digi fixes the problem with LE. |
