Slow bounce to quicktime
Did a bounce to quicktime for approval on a few things and the movie seemed to take an age to encode? On my old LE 7.4.2 system a 10 min file would bounce to quicktime in ~ 13min. Same size/quality movie now takes 33 min on HD2?? Turned off video out firewire too in case it made a difference but didn't seem to help/hinder things. Movie was H264, 512 x 288.
PT's 8.1 HD2, Mojo SDI, Mac OS 10.5.8, dedicated audio & video drives. Anyone else finding this? Thanks D |

Re: Slow bounce to quicktime
It's because the video is being re-encoded to H.264 (one of the slowest codecs to encode). In LE, Pro Tools simply makes a copy of the existing picture in whatever format it may be and adds your mix as the new soundtrack. No encoding is performed, so it doesn't take nearly as long.

Re: Slow bounce to quicktime
Digi really needs to step up the game in this area. I don't understand why it needs to re-encode. Most of the time simply copying and adding the new audio will do. More complex options are available if needed. It takes so long that I usually use QT Pro to version out mixes.

Re: Slow bounce to quicktime
yeah, I use QT pro.
Bounce the audio in PT. Open audio file in QT Open Movie in QT Select all of the audio with cmd-A, copy to clipboard (cmd-C) switch movie to foreground and paste using opt-cmd-V Open movie proporties cmd-J delete first soundtrack Save movie takes seconds!

Re: Slow bounce to quicktime
Thanks Nate - that is what i thought was happening but couldn't understand why Digi wouldn't give you the option to just copy the movie like in LE.
FajitaTone - yep thats the way i got it going yesterday after a bit more searching on the web - thanks for the post though - have you ever had any problem with sync using this system?? Thanks D |

Re: Slow bounce to quicktime
not if I select the movie in PT before the bounce. that way the files are equal in length.

Re: Slow bounce to quicktime
I've used this method before (recorded out the mix during the review to save time). It's just an arse doing it that way really.
I'll be using it all the time from now methinks as there's no need to re-encode a QT movie. Definitely a backwards step for ProTools. |

Re: Slow bounce to quicktime
Somebody needs to write a little program where you drag in a video file and an audio file and spits out a quicktime with both. With some simple options like add to or replace existing audio, and reencode the audio to AAC.
I would pay for that. The quicktime workflow works, but it's killing the mood!! Cheers |
