Default Filename Lenght in OS10

Hi all,

...just sent a CD out to a client.

16 bit 44.1kHz BWF.

I checked that the file was readable and playable on Windows Media Player 8 and on Soundapp on Mac OS9.

The client tried to access the file on OSX and the icon disappeared and the file was no longer visible.

I copied the file with a shorter file name (I suspect 31 characters is the max for OSX) and it opened.

Anyone know if this a problem across the board or just for my files.

What is the maximum file name lenght for OS 10 ( I thought it was 255).

Thanks

Mark

I think you are right 31.
I had some real problems when a Session had a name with more than 31 characters in it.
Also make sure that there are no illegal characters in the file name too.
That will make files disappear in OSX.

Careful, because I think it's thirty-one including the extension! This is kinda lame if you're still trying to find your exported sound fx by a file naming convention that doesnt' follow strict naming codes. Pro Tools does this in order to maintain session compatibility with OS 9 systems. If they didn't impose this limitation, people would scream in horror when changing platforms or operating systems. A necessary evil, me thinks.

The filename limit in OSX is 255 characters. There are some illegal characters.

The 31 length limit is imposed by some applications (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) that want to maintain crossplatform compatibility with other OSes.
