Default Video question 1: DVD ripping for smoothest playback in PT

I have some DVD video that I need to rip so that I can put it into my PT session. It's concert footage of a show I'm mixing.

Can anyone suggest the best way to do this with the goal being the smoothest playback in PT when I'm running the session? I've had some files come to me in the past where the video plays really smoothly and I've had others where it really is a pain...choppy, glitchy, slow to start, etc.

Thanks so much...

There are many DVD ripping programs, but you'll find that most want to rip into an Inter-Frame compression scheme, like H.264, which is not ideal for ProTools. However, you could rip the DVD as a full MPEG-2 stream, so pulling the data off without recompressing it, and then use some shareware or freeware app, or maybe even Quicktime, to put it into some format that will work well with ProTools.

The suggestions seem to be to use an Intra-Frame compression scheme, such as MotionJpegA or even DV. Both of these seem to play quite smooth in ProTools.

In the past we always used MotionJpegA and had the best luck with that. Quicktime Pro on a Mac anyway can export as this format, so if nothing else you should be able to rip the DVD as whatever you can, and then convert to this.

Good luck!

I use MacTheRipper, but if there's no copy protection, you can just copy the Video_TS folder via Finder. Once ripped, I use DVDxDVPro to convert MPEG-2 (Video_TS folder) to a DV. It rocks.
... but does it help the chorus?
