Default MIDI converting 16th to 8th notes

Aloha members,

I have a song with a couple of midi tracks, no audio till now. I would like to convert all the 16'th notes to 8'th - 1/8 to 1/4 etc in the whole song. Basically changing from 4/4 to ala breve, meaning the song stays in 4/4 but the tempo changes from 1/4-120 bpm to 1/2 120 bpm.

Any suggestions?

greetings from Holland

Jens

Whole song or just a section?

Easiest way is to go to Grid mode, make sure the grid is in the correct note value (8th notes for example). Highlight all of the 16th notes, use the ] tool and drag to the grid. This should expand the note to the appropriate length.

thanks Jon for your quick reply

what I actually want to do is not changing the length of only the 16th
i wanna transform all notes in the song, so 16th become 8th, 1/8 to 1/4, 1/4 to 1/2 etc.
As an example - having one 4/4 bar with a group of 8 1/16 notes on the first two beats i wanna change this bar to an 4/4 with 8 1/8 notes on the four beats.
that means - one bar of the original song with 1/4=120bpm will change into two bars with 1/2=120bpm
indeed i need to do this for the whole song.

Same theory applies, just select the whole track. The good thing about 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, etc is that they are all divisible by 2.

Or, you could just cut the tempo in half to 60BPM. I know there are shortcuts, but I'm not at my rig right now, so can't remember off the top of my head.

Hey Jon, thanks again
i tried it but it only changes the tempo of the song or makes the notes/clips longer.
with what i am planning to do i should end up with the double amount of bars, let's say 100 instead of 50 - one bar with let's say 16 16'th notes would then look like two bars with 8 8'th notes instead - adjusting the tempo to half time it would still sound the same only look different
another example - an 1/8 note on the second beat of the bar would be transformed into a 1/4 on the third beat
Hope i could make clear what i want to do

I think the point that is being missed here is that if you have a bar with 16 16th notes in it and you want to ultimately end up with 8 8ths instead you would have to erase 8 16th notes etc., every other one that is. I can think of no way to do that automatically.

Hi Werner - good one
However - i guess it is just not possible in PT- i remember that in Logic they had a function for transforming note values for the whole song, as i said - for instance one bar of 16 16'th notes would be converted into two bars of 8 8'th notes each etc...
grtz

It still sounds like if you did that you would end up with a song that would be twice as long and half the tempo, unless the Logic feature had some way to compensate for it.

Hey Werner

exactly - as i wrote before - the amount of bars would be doubled then, the tempo should be moved from 1/4 100bpm to 1/2 100bpm. so it would sound exactly the same - only it would look pretty different - in this case i need to print the parts - that's why i am looking for it

greetings

Jens

Switch the timebase selector for your MIDI track to Samples, double the tempo, and switch the timebase back to ticks.
