I have a 5 year old q6600 quad core on Windows XP running 8.1.1 HD3 that does the trick with all the RTAS I am able to run. You could build a HD3 PCI system from ebay for under 2k. You would have to run on windows if you want PCI slots with a fast CPU. I think that's why they are so cheap, the fast macs are all PCI-e. I will wait as always and stay with a stable system.
