Default PT performance: Dual 2.3 PPC G5 Vs 2.33 MBPro duo intel ??

Has anybody had the chance to compare these two systems with Protools LE -DIGI002?
Which one perform the best? Are theY pretty in the same ballpark re plugins instances?

i'm buying a new computer soon and need to choose between one of the two.
I can buy the G5 tower from a friend for half the price than the new macbook pro 2.33 and i own an lcd monitor.

so i really need advice on their performace with protools LE.
I suppose they would perform pretty the same being both of them 2.3 dual-core.
Is dual intel powerful than dual G5 at the same Ghz speed? (2.3)

anybody has or had those systems and can advice?

thanks in advance

Mat

I owned a g5 2.3 for a while. It's a totally good computer and fast. I now use a quad 3.0 macpro. I am getting a macbook pro but I haven't gotten it yet. What do you plan on doing? If you are using a bunch of VI's and plugins the g5 may be a better fit because you can load it full of RAM. The macbook pro you can only go up to 3GB. I think that the fronstide bus speed in the g5 is faster (I think it's 1 ghz and the macbook is 660 or something like that) but the intel still may perform better. If the g5 is half the price then maybe you should go for it. If you really need the portability then get the macbook.

Dude, forget the PPC's, the new intels are super fast and super quiet. I've read that a 2GHz Macbook offers better performance than a dual G5. The only setback to intel is that some plugs are still being ported so that they are universal for both platforms, that will depend on what third party software you use.

Cheers

thanks for repling,
I don't need portability, i'm going to use the rig mostly for mixing in the box.
I think i will use 24-30 tracks maximum per session, each track loaded with 2-3 plugins maximum. I'm not using VI most of the times.
If G5 dual has a comparable performance or even a little less than MBpro duo i think i'm opting for the G5 as i'm paying only €1000 for it, macbook pro is €2400.
does RAM have a role on plugins counts too? i mean over 2GB.
Would a -8GB loaded- dual G5 reach for more plugins instances than a -2GB loaded- G5 for example?
i was thinking RAM didn't get involved at all on protools plugins counts.
Isn't so?

I have a dual 2.3 G5 and a core duo 2.0 Macbook. Honestly, I find the G5 about 15% faster, if that. They're very close in overall speed. The G5 has a bit more RAM in it (2.5GB vs. 2GB in the macbook) and that might have something to do with it - programs load quicker (including PTLE). RAM only affects virtual instruments (specifically, samplers) and will improve their performance, but has nothing to do with effects etc.

I still use it because of the stuff that hasn't been ported to UB yet (Atmosphere, Guitar Combos, some PSP stuff, and others), but the intel macs are pretty damn impressive from a performance standpoint.
