Re: Pro Tools master track vs Logic's stereo Out fader?
I don't know about Logic, but in PT a master fader is basically a visualization of a physical output. You don't need to create one, tracks assigned to the output will reach it and play whether you have a master fader for it or not.
One thing about MF's is that their inserts are all post fader unlike normal tracks. This has to do with dithering. If you want to reduce the bit depth on a bounce thru the MF, you want the dither to be last, and no processing to happen after it. Many, me included, find it natural, therefore to create a aux track that I route everything thru and acts more like a analog master. It also gives you flexibility in routing and bouncing stuff. IHTH

Thank you Ben
If you don't have a Master Fader, then how would you know whether the master bus was clipping or not? |

Re: Pro Tools master track vs Logic's stereo Out fader?
Well, you 'd simply create a master fader. Also, there are the meters in the transport window. In my typical setup with the aux "master fader", I option-click the fader and trust its meter. Or use a meter plugin. There are many ways. The point is, when there is no master fader in a session, the main outs are +/-0dbfs so you can meter it a step ahead, so to speak.

Exactly the reason I recommend always having a master track, even if you do nothing other than check the meters now and then In my early days with PT, I often didn't show a master and had no idea how much clipping was going on
