Default A wee question about power supplies

Just bought the JSP Sprite power supply.

It first caught my eye cos it's transparent and has lots of funky flashing lights.

I'm going to try it out as an external power supply on my non-PT PC, and if it works out OK get another.

The man at the fair plugged one in for me and it looked good and sounded real quiet. I've been worried about my equipment here getting hot.

However I get it home, plug it in, and nothing happens.

But should I expect that? Won't it just not work until the PC main power switch is connected?

I just want to check on that before I take this PC apart.

Yes, I know I could phone them, but it's Sunday, and tomorrow's a public holiday here.

LOL

Most PS units must have a load attached to work. Hopefully that is all that is wrong.

Thanks Joe. That's probably right, but if no-one can positively reassure me here, I think I'll leave it till Tuesday and ring the shop.

To "fire Up" your power supply needs a switch signal from your MB - otherwise your power supply - and fan would run 24/7 when your computer is turned off, and still plugged into the wall.

That's what I would have thought.

But I saw the guy in the shop plug it in and it started up. Maybe he bridged something and I didn't notice.

Bit of a mystery.

I'll ring him up and sound stupid - "hey it's not working like it did in the shop" and see what he says.

Several companies make a power supply load that plugs into the motherboard plug. That allows testing of the PS outside the normal environment.

Daisy,

That sort of looks like my truck.....just a little more sacked than mine. (Did I use that term properly?)

Ah, there we have it then. There's always a rational explanation.

Daisy's having a lie-in (public holiday) we were up late watching DVDs.
