Aurora 16 and 96 i/o sync error

Hi,
Just the other day my protools 8 hd 2 accel system started having sync issues.
When using the Aurora 16 as internal sync, on the 96 i/o the "int" light is illuminated and there is a popping/ snapping digital sound on the 96 i/o channels. Shouldn't the 96 i/o "ext" light be illuminated?
the problem is fixed by selecting "internal" sync on the 96 i/o. But I"d rather sync to the Aurora as master.
This started erroring sometime after I was using Spdif in on the 96 i/o.
Ideas?

How are the 2 interfaces connected together? For the Aurora to be the master, it needs to feed clock to the 96 io. Not having either unit to look at, I would guess a wordclock cable from the Aurora out to the 96 in? And set the 96 to external(or does it do it automatically if it detects a valid clock source)? Or do both units have Loop Sync ports(as on 192 and HD IO boxes)?

thanks that fixed it. I think I swapped em trying to get the spdif in working and forgot
