Thanks for all the Input!, all fine solutions. But..
Ryan is correct "It's beneficial for the director or other crew (who don't understand how Pro Tools works) to see a user-friendly take counter."
Also you need to be at a specific zoom level to see clip name, if you're zoomed in and recording, no name is displayed on the clips

Thanks!

Hi Ryan,

After watching your video again, I don't see PT actually going into record and PT clips being created

Thanks

I just didn't have the track record-enabled. I quickly threw the video together on a new system to show how it'd work. You can send a PT file to me here

ryan at ryandyoung dot com

BoomRecorder doesn't even need to be set to record the backups, either. It could purely be used as a source to pull info from. It might take some clever routing to feed BoomRecorder.

Please let me know the screen resolution you're using and what your Pro Tools setup is (HD Native with OMNI, 003 with PTHD, etc), thanks!

I know you said that EdiPromt is expensive... but if you use it regularly and take advantage of its other features it is well worth it. it is a tool just like other software applications and plugins you may use. It does exactly what you are looking for. Plus Mark and the other people at Sounds In Sync are very quick to respond to questions and support.

Hi Michael,

I just sent you a reply email.

Pro Tools needs to have pre-roll on and set to QuickPunch mode. I set the windows like they are in this video just to show what's going on with BoomRecorder in the background. You can configure it any way you'd like as long as the Edit Window is in the foreground of the main monitor. There's a slight difference of workflow, though. These key-commands can be whatever you choose, but here's what I used.

Change cue name: cmd+opt+cntl+F13
Record: cmd+opt+cntl+F12
Stop: cmd+opt+cntl+F11
Display current cue: cmd+opt+cntl+d

The other great thing with BoomRecorder is that you can feed it LTC and have it stamp the backup files with accurate timecode (not shown in my demo video).

I also routed a stereo optical output from my HD Omni to feed my computer's optical input. This feeds BoomRecorder as my backup (in case Pro Tools hiccups). I have BoomRecorder go into record a few seconds prior to Pro Tools as well as staying in record a few seconds after Pro Tools, just to catch some "magic" that tends to happen when you're not typically recording. The other great thing about BoomRecorder is that it compiles a beautiful log sheet at the end of the session.

HI Ryan,Thanks again!

I'll have to get into it this weekend.

VO directors work at a furious pace

Tonto,
Ediprompt is a different workflow, and yes its quite cool with all the additional features that we wouldn't use. I installed it and played with it late last year.
Believe it or not some editors are quite peculiar, instead of embracing something new, I know they will complain about the minimum 1 frame punch in between clips, The editor Tabs to the next clip to edit and for a Video Game or ADR with hundreds of takes ,they will need to Tab x amount of additional times.
