This is a VERY interesting study. I would say a must-read for anybody involved in film mixing!
Did you ever try to present it to AES (locally or internationally)?

There is some cross-posting of Steven's poll between different forums. It might be interesting to repost your pdf link at Gearslutz as well in this thread:
https://www.gearslutz.com/board/post...ng-levels.html

Greetings,

Thierry
@Thierryd
I wrote it in college and my university did suggest a presentation at the AES convention, but were lacking funds to submit it. So instead I translated the whole thing to english in my freetime and sent it out to raise some awareness of what might be done. Right now the topic relies on other people to pick up the idea and develop it further.
Best, Gregor

It was actually quite popular back in 1940 when movies like Gone with the Wind were 4 hours long. Fast forward to 2017 with average 2 hours?
I'll pass. We spend just 2 hours to get o work sitting in traffic in LA

I got nearly 400 respondents, from all regions and backgrounds, so the results are quite interesting for the moment , but it's just long to get through all the analysis.
Hi Steven! Any results from research? :)

Hi all,
you can view the results of the survey here.
I'll be posting an analysis soon.

Gregor, I am impressed with how coherently and thoroughly you present your arguments and conclusions. Very, very well done.

In the poll results, I am struck by the huge range of playback level for those working in the smaller room sizes, even when results are filtered for only TV/Broadcast where we presumably are working for the same target loudness. The 15 smallest rooms in the USA report working (predub or final dub) between 74 to 85, an 11db difference in working levels, even though nearly all deliverables have -24 loudness targets. WTF?

The survey questions were for cinema mixes, not broadcast. That might explain it. But in any case there is a lot of food for thought in all this.

Dolby recommends 3-6 dB lower monitor levels for broadcast material, the rational being that the listening level is lower.

85 dBC SPL for cinema, 79-82 for TV.

[EDIT:] Just realized you meant variability between TV facilities, not versus cinema. Never mind.

Hi guys and girls,
I finally got round to finishing the survey results document.
You can grab it from the Yellow Cab studios blog page.
Mike Thornton at Pro Tools Expert has also picked up on it here.
