Default TDM to ? Upgrade

Anyone else still pondering the TDM upgrade path?

We're running several rooms with TDM Systems (V8, V9), and are unsure of the clearest/best/easiest upgrade path. I'm hesitant to jump into another card based system, and have it phased out in future Digi/Avid upgrades.

Our systems are primarily used for producing advertising, and audio tracks for videos and TV ads... So our track count needs are not huge.

We're leaning towards the Mbox Setup running PT 11. I'm not too sure what we'll miss not having ProTools HD running, but from what I can tell it won't affect us much.

Love your feedback, and thoughts. Appreciate your help navigating these waters.

I think the stability of a TDM system is the first thing you will miss, plus the low latency when tracking many inputs. Just my 2 cents :)

Kelley, get an iLok v2 and the computer your planing on using.
Then get the 30 day demo of Pro Tools 11 and see if that works for you running sessions your have.
2 things HD has that may be an issue for you are having more than 1 video track and Advanced Field Recorder work flow.

TDM can only really be upgraded to HDX as hardware exchange. Obviously you can buy new systems whenever you wish, but if I understand your original question correctly, then the only option is to send the old cards back to Avid and have them send you new HDX card(s).

Also, look at the comparison chart of Regular PT versus the HD and see what features are removed from the newer regular version. Since there is no CPTK option you will definitely lose features if you switch to a regular version of PT from your TDM system, but not sure if that matters.

Obviously there is this beautiful thing called HDN Thunderbolt, which comes with HD software license and is not a card, which the OP apparently does not want in the next system. But as far as I know, you can't crossgrade TDM system to a HDN, only TDM to HDX.
