omf avid to pt: sync slippage
I'm working on 6, 15 minute reels generated from an AVID OMF and converted to PT via Digitranslator 2. The AVID OMF's were 24 fps and after loading into PT I changed them to 29.97 ND and with pulldown.
Then I digitize the 3/4 worktapes and bring 'em online. The problem is that WITH pulldown, the online video drifts against the 3/4" tapes I'm chasing. Good thing I checked that. If I remove pulldown from the session, the online picture locks up well with the 3/4 picture, but then the audio drifts. The only solution I can come up with is to stretch the dialogue by inserting a frame into the dialogue every 20-30 seconds or so (to make the audio run longer). I think it's quite a bit more of a drift than a drop/non-drop discrepancy. This will do, but if anybody has a more cool suggestion, please make it. -John

You're working with QuickTime capture?

Re: omf avid to pt: sync slippage
Well, yeah, I digitize the video in Premiere 6 at 700K/sec (360x240). Mac G4.

The latest PT version, 5.1.3. 24 mix plus on a G4 "Dual" 500.

Re: omf avid to pt: sync slippage
What version on Pro Tools are you using?
There was a bug in Pro Tools versions 5.0 and earlier. When at 29.97 frame rate and the audio pull down was enabled, the Quicktime was pulled down also. This should have been corrected in Pro Tools 5.0.1 or higher. (Remember you do need to re-spot the Quicktime video after you change the frame rate or pull down settings.)

Re: omf avid to pt: sync slippage
Sounds like you need that old Premiere 4.2 functionality called "conform movie to 30fps". Adobe removed this command from future versions, but I've been told they just changed the name. In 4.2 or 4.2LE, this command would take something like 10 seconds to process a 29.97 movie. Can anyone say exactly how you do this in Premiere 5.1, 6.0, etc.?
I'm absolutely sure this is why your captured video is not syncing correctly to the 29.97/pulldown session. FYI, there is a utility available online called QT Mutator that may do the same thing, but I haven't had a chance to check it out. Good luck. |

Thanks for the knowledgeable response. That really helps out. Will look into it.
