iPod Disconnect
This is a fairly minor but still quite annoying problem. Why does Protools insist on taking control of my iPod? I have no intention of using it for any kind of playback or storage within ProTools, yet I am forced to go into the Protools workspace to unmount it (iTunes gives me this warning: The iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application).
So after switching to ProTools and unmounting the iPod, it gets stuck on a "Do Not Disconnect" screen - even after shutting down Protools and iTunes. So I'm forced to disconnect it but I've noticed data corruption from doing this. Is there any way I can just tell Protools to leave my iPod alone? ADB |

Re: iPod Disconnect
Unless I'm missing out on something, I don't know why it would be a big deal to just remember not to launch Pro Tools with an iPod connected to the computer.
I'm also surprised at the idea one would want to run Pro Tools and iTunes at the same time...but maybe that attitude is a holdover from the early days when running Pro Tools demanded as much CPU as the hardware could deliver.

Re: iPod Disconnect
Or just remember to eject/disconnect the iPod before you launch Pro Tools.
FYI If you eject from iTunes and leave it plugged in it will still be charging the iPod. And yes it is annoying. |

Re: iPod Disconnect
the protools software wil check to see what drives are available for use on the system. Once dtermined, Protools sets up a database access path to each and every available drive. The IPOD looks like a firewire drive so a Digidesign database folder(s) get created on the IPOD and the IPOD is not in use by Protools until you shutdown protools. Although i've never looked, there may be an option to dismount or remove a drive from the protools workspace while protools is active. You might want to poke around in the Protools manual.
cheers geo

Re: iPod Disconnect
This is the ONE THING at the top of my list for PT. Either the ability to tell PT what external drives I DO WANT it to grab and index, or the ability to tell PT what external drives I DO NOT want it to grab and index.
This seems like a simple thing to get right. |

Re: iPod Disconnect
I agree, the Digidesign Database file corrupt the iPod so it has to be reformatted using disc utility. Very crumby. Even deleting the database files does not fix the error. At this point the only safe thing is not to attach the iPod while Pro Tools is running.

Re: iPod Disconnect
Just a thought: Pro Tools works very stable even with lots of audio files to handle. Maybe one of the reasons for that is that it takes total control over all the busses (SATA, FireWire, SCSI) this audio can come from.
It's not necessary to quit Pro Tools to unmount a drive, use the workspace instead. Kind regards Mark
