Default How loud is YOUR Mac\'s fan ???

I have a dual 2.7 G5 and a 002r

My fan goes full tilt as soon as I launch PT.

Outside running PT, it's a great quiet machine for the most part

I even have a "Silence Box" that I keep it in but I can still hear those fans running ( I'm sure the heat being closed in a box dosent help )

But it seems like there's a code thats written into Pro Tools to start the fan . A new session w/ 0 tracks still start the fans just RUNNING !!

any ideas / comments , etc

I have a dual 2.5 and I struggle with fan noise too. One of my solutions has been to run at reduced processor performance under energy saver / options in system preferences. I haven't noticed any general performance issues while doing this and it results in a significant drop in fan noise. You can also look into chud tools and the "allow nap" function.

I plan in swapping out fans or changing systems as soon as my current project ends. I was told when I bought this system 10 months ago that it would be quiet and it's the noisiest computer I've ever owned. But the solutions I mentioned are a good work around.

I certainly get the fan noise on startup, but that applies to other apps besides PT. With PT it usually goes away after a minute, unless I'm really pushing tracks and soft-synths.

You should have a thermometer in your silence case. You'll probably find the temp doesn't much higher inside, so long as your fans are working properly.

You might also try playing with your processor performance settings, though Digi wouldn't recommend it.

iMac G5 17" 1.8GHz screaming loud, especially with more than 8 tracks and 8 plugins. SCREAMING LOUD!

Mac Pro dead silent, unbelievable! SO much power, so little heat and noise. With even the biggest session the CPU temps on both processors stay below 100degrees F.

THe G5's just run hot, plain and simple.

I'm with oddsare, i just ebayed my 1.8GHz G5 iMac because the fan noise was driving me crazy with Pro Tools, FCP etc. Now i'm just using an iBook and am currently shopping around for a new Mac. G5's are loud.

Cheers

I've got a 2.3 dual core G5 and it's really quiet. The first G5s duals that came out have this problem. If you google the internet, you will find stuff about these early G5s towers with bad fan noise. Also had an iMac 2.0 G5 that was fine until I updated to PTLE 7. Everytime I started PTLE 7.1 , the fans would go full on. Never did it in version 6. Still doesn't do it on this 2.3 dual core, and I have 5 drives inside.

Hmm, I have the same machine (dual 2.7) and it's not nearly that bad. I think something's not right with yours.

My fans rev up pretty good from time to time, but usually only when I am rendering video or something like that. Pro Tools rarely gets the fans up above a low hum.

I'm not sure if it's something you can fix yourself, or would require a trip to the tech, but what you're describing is not normal for that machine, in my experience.

I suppose it depends on the type of work you are doing. Cutting film dialogue with noisy fans can be extremely difficult.
