Default noob question - Monitoring audio

Greetings -

I have an 001 system running under XP. Is there a way - either with the computer running Pro Tools or otherwise - to hear devices connected to audio inputs *other* than inputs 3 & 4? I have verified that all devices are connected correctly and working properly.

Plugging the audio outs from my modules into the 001 inputs 3 & 4 does produce sound. It doesn't appear to be a hardware issue anywhere.

Like I said, a noob question. Gotta start at the beginning though. <g> Looking forward to your reply. Thank you!

rmanasa,

You should be able to hear devices connected to all 18 inputs on an 001. Make sure that the channels you have assigned to those inputs have the outputs assigned to the Master bus (either directly or via an Aux channel).

Hope this helps,
Greg

Hi Greg, and thanks for the quick reply.

I'm assuming "18" is a typo, and you meant "8", correct? And it sounds like this is something that can be done within Pro Tools, but not "live". Is that also correct?

FYI, I'm coming into Pro Tools from a career in live performance. A lot of the conventional recording lingo is still a little alien to me. I'm not sure if I have the outputs assigned to the Master Bus - indeed, I'm not sure where or what that is. I'm just running through the Getting Started manual, and trying to address things as they arise.

Here's what I have done. I've started creating a generic template. My hope is to do my initial recording as MIDI tracks, so I can swap out different, e.g., string patches for a track to see which module sounds the best. After the piece is written in this way, I'll then convert/record those tracks into audio.

So, I've got three tracks so far - an Aux track for the click, a MIDI track and an Aux track, so I can hear the MIDI track. The click works fine - I've left the input at S/PDIF L (doesn't seem to matter what this is set to) and the output set to Out 1-2. No problem there. The MIDI track is set to the default input of All and the output set to DgdsgnD0013, which is the audio channel of my master keyboard (which generates its own sounds as well as controlling the sounds in the modules.) The Aux track is set to the audio channel of whichever module I want to hear. So far, so good.

Here's where the I start to lose it. First, I get an overloaded MIDI track input when I hit the "R" record button, even if I'm not playing the keyboard and triggering any MIDI or audio in that fashion. There's also a lot of latency and hung notes if I do play the keyboard. There's some kinda loop there, but I don't know where it is or how to correct it.

Second, do I need a separate MIDI/Aux combination for each MIDI channel and device I want to record? I can hear audio from multiple modules with multiple AUX tracks, but I don't know how to get separate MIDI tracks set up and "dedicated" to their own Aux tracks (or if that's even necessary.)

Thanks again for your help, Greg. Looking forward to your reply.

Ah. Thanks JMS40. Of course you're correct. I was just thinking of my instruments.

Any thoughts on the other items?
