Default HDD arrangement - System+Scratch+Samples?

Hi guys I have a quick question about the correct way to setup my system. I thought I had an understanding of this but I'm finding myself a bit confused in some areas. I tried to search around but couldn't find an answer so I apologies if it is already out there.

So basically I understand that it's common practice to have two separate hard-drives. One for the system/DAW and the other as the scratch drive.

I am using a 13" 2.53Ghz Macbook Pro and I have a FW800 Lacie as my scratch drive. I use pro tools 8 which is installed onto the internal system drive. I also use drum sampling software like BFD, Superior 2.0 and Battery.

My question is...Should these samples libraries be located on:

1. The system drive, 2. The scratch drive, or 3. A third dedicated hard drive? And also should the programs themselves be installed on the external drive/s or just the library content?

Hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers.

Good general rule of thumb, no matter the daw software: programs on a fast system drive (PT doesn't support recording to the system drive), samples (if you use them a lot) on a second drive, and recorded material on a third drive. And I'm talking distinct drives, not partitioned drives which don't get you anything.

Thanks for that. I currently have PT on my system drive which is stock standard (thinking of replacing it with a SSD) I have a LaCie FW800 external for my audio and I have my drum sample libraries on a third USB2.0 drive.
