Default Hi, guys finally upgrading .... question about video

Hi all...
yup i got my lease approved and i'm spending some money.

I'm purchasing a HD2 protools acel system to be run on OSx 10.4.9 and I want to use DECKLINK EXTREME cards for capture and playback of SD video.

I am also purchasing a Digi003 with DVtool kit 2 and I want to use a DECLINK EXTREME for video capture and payback on it as well.

Does any one have any experience with the DECKLINK product or do you recommend a different video capture/playback card for either of the 2 systems?

cheers

I went with nthe AJa Kona3 HD/SDI card. I needed the HD option for clients. It's great. Picture looks amazing.
I'm feeding into a Panasonic 50" HS PLasma and the SD signal captured at 595i / 10 Bit uncompressed is gorgeous.
I'm running everything out of a separate G5 via VVTR. Complicated rig but very smooth and solid.

Hello Georgia,
We're on a PC/PT HD couple(4 sets) and all using decklink(non HD) interface. No problems so far.

Hi Georgia!

We use the Decklink Extreme with VVTR. Marti does too. No complaints.

Just an aside question, do you have to use any offsets or delays because of your 50" Plasma monitors? I have noticed on occasion that they seem to create a delay in the video.
If so, how much delay/offset and how do you go about compensating? What about a variety of plasma and non-plasma monitors getting the same video feed?

Thanks,

Buddy

I do use a delay on the audio. Mine requires 4800 samples to sit right.
I only use the one monitor for the most part. Occasionaly I'll use a small CTR in the V/O Booth for ADR but I don't
do uch of that.

georgia,

i was looking at the Decklink Extreme and wanted one but they were too new and not shipping yet. So I opted for the Kona. i am VERY happy. the beauty of the Extreme is the I/O connectivity -- which i think would suit your situation. however, the AJA products are excellent, so, let features be your guide.

the issues of audio-->video sync has been discussed a lot here, as has been the issue of plasma's.

Richard Fairbank's developed a fantastic leeeeatle box called Syncheck : SYNCKECK WEBSITE . read his papers and get that box. it will tell you exactly how much delay you are getting on your system. each system is a little different. with this, you will know.

you can either compensate for it in Pro Tools in the Video Offset window, or on a device such as VVTR in the preferences.

as to multiple video displays simultaneously, that is a little trickier..... i would not recommend doing it, or, living with the consequences of have slightly different sync.

Hey Minister! hoows life in the great white north?

I'm going with the AJA KONA LHe I like the breakout box, the 23.976 supprt and HD SDI & SD SDI capture and playback.... Hey minister, how do you import video ( what compression and such with your kona card, and how much strain is placed on the the system when mixing with video? I'm planning on a modeswt compression for the HD stuff and running it from an onboard SATA disk in my new Mac Pro.

I rin te Kona3 card in a dual 2.3 G5 on a second internal SATA drive just like you are desribing. With the VVTR, there is no drag on the audio system.
I just did a session with 16 HD spots tied in one quicktime and the session contained around 60 tracks with super dense edits and a ton of plugins and automation. The system never bogged from start to finish. There is a bout a second delay betweeen when you hit play and the picture locks up but you learn to adjust.

When working in SD i will usually capture from a D-Beta at uncompressed 595i 10 bit.
When working in HD i get the file from the editors, so they have come in 720p/59.94 8bit or 1080i/29.97 or 23.98 in a DVCPRO/HD copmpression.
