Optical ADAT Cable -Maximum Length?

I have an 002R as well as an Alesis AI3 that sits in a rack with my synths. Between them is a 20' Hosa ADAT lightpipe cable (2) for input and output. I've been getting nasty digital noise (clicks and such) so that it's unusable. Didn't seem to have this problem with the 001 before. I've tried switching the input/output cables, but still no good.

Anyone have this problem as well?

Is it the quality of the cable - and if so, what do people recommend?
Is there a max length to use for the optical?

thanks - I searched the DUC and didn't see anything on this.
