Default Auratone

I am not sure if I am spelling this right, but back in the ancient days I used to record a lot in an old studio that was equipped with a pair of Auratone speakers. They were really crappy sounding but the idea was to use them to compare your mix against the regular monitors. They sounded like old car radio speakers, and believe me, if you could get your mix to sound good on these, then it will sound great on anything.
I havent seen them in years but i would like to have a set for my studio.
OK all you old salts out there - any ideas on where I might find some? Of perhaps another cheapo secondary monitor system to do the same thing?

According to the reviews, these speakers may do the trick, and they are marked down to about $10.

ahhh! {leaning back in chair, smiling with hands held behind head}

Ye Olde Horrortone, eh?

you may well find a lot of big studio's that have 'em on regular call by the dozen, if covered in cobwebs. the black ones are the best as they're magnetically shielded.

i wouldn't recommend using then for much except mono tv (or fm) balance or placing them under the SSL or Neve at odd angles and intervals to hear how your 'mix mojo' is coming along. i swear, in a few years time, NS10's will be thrown into the same basket as Auratones...

hehehehe....
I knew there would be someone who would know what I was talking about!
Even back in the day the auratones were referred to with a wink because they were so cruddy. I guess that dates me back to the days when an 8-track went ka-chunk, and the best car stereos had them blasting through an ac-delco speaker in the dash.
Well I still want a pair!!

Hi guys, I'm going to make a little grot box speaker based on the Auratone. My question is...Does anyone know whether they had any dampening on the interior walls of the cabinet? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure they did. There were different vintages that used different drivers and sounded different. I understand they are back in production by one of the children.

Thanks guys. The price of the originals is what has made me want to make my own. I'm just a hobbyist and can't justify that expense. I'm a carpenter with a workshop with all the machinery so making the cabinets is second nature to me. Whether they will sound anything like the Auratones, I will never know because I've never heard any but they will give me another point of reference aside my main monitors. Thanks again.
