Default OT: Rotate Phase 90 degrees

Hi All,

I am trying to properly decode a 1968 analog master tape processed with Haeco CSG, meaning that the right channel has a 90 degrees phase reversal on the right channel.

Whilst many plugins have a phase reverse button (meaning 180 degrees) is there any solution you can think of that would allow me to transfer the master tape after applying a 90 degrees phase correction!!!

Many thanks for your help,

David

Wikipedia says you can fix it with Winamp. They also claim that there's a more natural fix available in Adobe Audition.

Many thanks for this.

However, I thought ProTools was way more pro than WinAmp and I only use Mac software/platforms.

This may be food for thought for our plugin manufacturers... ;-))

Cheers,

David

Hi,
A 90 deg shift to a signal is not a trivial audio processing task. It requires many-order "all-pass filters" which in theory don't affect amplitude, but affect only phase. In analog, there is strong low frequency limitation.
In dsp, there's the so called "hilbert transform" which does a 90 deg shift.
Check out Tritone PhaseTone, it's supposed to do that.
Maybe feeding the signal through a dolby surround decoder could be a last resort. The encoder also used 90 deg shift tricks.

Many thanks for your kind replies.

Unfortunately, Tritone's PhaseTone plugin no longer works and is no longer supported !

And since I have an HD3, all my slots are used, preventing me from getting an UAD card. So no luck with the UAD/Little Labs plugin...

I must say I'm very surprised that nobody ever thought of addressing this for Native and/or TDM platforms ! ... unless one of you knows of something ?...

Kindest regards,

David

Hi David,

If there's any way i can help! like processing one side of the signal with little labs plug etc. only requires sending the file across and back again. i'm in the studio later today for 5-6 hours (saturday) if you're stuck.

I would have been delighted to do so, if the project wasn't confidential !
Thanks,

Yeah, I've run into cases where I wish Pro Tools would do some of those "Swiss Army Knife" functions like phase shift...

"Wheels of Fire" certainly sounds a lot better once you counteract the CSG!

iZotope's Alloy has a phase rotator, but it is fixed, and I can't tell whether it can do a negative angle.

Looking at what Audition has to offer in phase correction, I would see if you couldn't get this done in the demo version. Otherwise, if the client's footing the bill, it's only $349.
