Recommended hard drive for dual G5 and HD2 Accel
Hello everyone, I'm setting up a new HD2 Accel system on a G5 dual 2.0 (not dual core model) and I plan to use this computer for ProTools only. my question is what is the ideal hard drive setup for the OS and applications only (not audio drives) I spoke with Digi and they recommended using one drive for the OS and HD7 together. I am curious however about everyone’s experience with this. Is one brand more reliable than the other, what size would be best, keeping in mind nothing but the OS and ProTools on it, well except plugins, but no samplers, libraries, etc... Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also how do the WD Raptor drives stack up, any issues there, and is the performance worth the cash? Thanks, everyone.

Re: Recommended hard drive for dual G5 and HD2 Accel
Hi,
For a system drive why would you need a raptor! i would stick with a more tried and tested technology and go with a Seagate barracuda 7200rpm. And there's no need for a storage monster either! a 250 will be fine and probably more reliable. Anyway, look at getting carbon copy cloner and always have an exact copy of your boot drive on an external firewire drive!! Chris

Re: Recommended hard drive for dual G5 and HD2 Accel
unless the internal drive is bad, I see no reason to replace it. However I would add a second SATA internal drive and use the fastest and largest one you can afford. I think the standard 500 gig Seagates are the most cost effective.

Re: Recommended hard drive for dual G5 and HD2 Accel
Hi, HD3 Accel. Dual 1.8 G5 PPC. I have used a pair of Barracuda SATA IV 160G very successfully for some time. One for Boot, One for Audio. Three partitions on each drive.
BEWARE- Recently I installed a new Barracuda SATA 2 for Audio of a TV project. Occasionally the audio stutters and I get the error message- Drive too slow etc. I have done some Googling and have found some posts out there suggesting that these new drives have a problem with the G5's SATA 1 hardware interface. I am in contact with Seagate support but no good info yet. I will report when I get to the bottom of this. Digi, do you know anything about this? DD |
