Default Surround track/bus/pan/effects still hardware dependent??

Is there some technical reason that surround tracks/busses/pans/effects are unavailable with capable (non-Digi/Avid) Core/ASIO interfaces even with the Complete Production Toolkit 2? PT9 was such an exciting change, but this is a showstopper for those of us doing surround whose application and/or budget are better suited for non-Avid hardware.

Are there any plans to remove this seemingly unnecessary limitation, or a technical explanation why it must exist? Competing DAWs offer this without a $2k expansion!

No, it should work regardless of the interface. You should have the ability to create surround tracks, busses, panners or effects even without a surround capable interface (you won't be able to listen to it then, of course).
