Default Movies with brilliant soundtracks?

Just saw Rumblefish and Streets of Fire again, after some years, and was struck with just how rich and textured the soundtracks were.

These were films where the sound was taken very seriously - most of the music for both was composed before they were shot, and Coppola and Hill, the respective directors, obviously wanted to do something special. And they did.

I recommend them both, though regretably Rumblefish never seems to have been released on DVD.

In Rumblefish Stuart Copeland's soundtrack is right up front, and post-sync'd Mickey Rourke appears to whisper his way through the entire movie. An extraordinary effect.

Streets of Fire is a Ry Cooder tour-de-force, and if Jim Steinman wasn't involved, his spirit certainly was. And the sound of that car engine...

My daughter (12) was knocked out by both, and wants the CDs, which shows just how enduring the music is (or how good her taste is. (Oh there I go again!))

But it made me wonder just how many other films there have been since with soundtracks like that. Have I missed them?

Any suggestions for further viewing?

Hi Rabidium,

You're in LA? It's 4am there...

Go to bed.

Daylight is good for you.

All good movies with excellent soundtrack albums. I loved Philip Glass's for Koyanissquatsi, again a film edited after the score was written. But I'm thinking more of films where something special was done in post.

<edit> Just thought of another: Talk Radio (Oliver Stoned/ Stuart Copeland (again)). Must see that again. I remember a lot of interesting use of stereo with the phone-in voices, overlayed with Copeland's off-beat instrumentation.

Elfman really does it for me. Beetlejuice really got that sound going IMO. Arachnaphobia was pretty good if I remember right as well.

There was a good theme going in Girl,Interrupted.

What about the Star Wars originals??? OMG, the Empire theme or Imperial March or whatever it's called is about the best I have ever heard!

Last Temptation of Christ - Peter Gabriel.

Batman - Danny Elfman

Ghost Dog - guy from Wu Tang Clan, forget his name?

Has anyone seen the new series on Bravo called Keen Eddie? The music cues are awesome through every episode. Don't know who does 'em.
