Default XP - Junk, Junk, JUNK

Here's My Setup:

Asus A7V-133, 1 gig Tbird
384 meg ram (micron)
Ati Rage 98 video card
20 gig sys drive (maxtor)
40 gig audio drive (maxtor)
001
SbLive
Realtek nic
Hp burner

Here's my story :
All runs well in 98se, very stable, dual boot for internet use. I started using XP when 5.3.1 came out...I've had to reinstall the os at least 6 times. Suffered bootup errors resulting in total crashes...tried multiple configurations ACAPI no ACAPI ect...Dual Boot, XP only...Ok so new plan of attack is to use xp for Pro-tools only...only now my downloaded 5.3.1 setup file on the CD, thats worked fine the other dozen times I've had to reinstall XP, suddenly reads a corrupt error and won't install. All the other files on the disc are fine, no scratches...Redownload the driver...same result...redownload the driver zip version...well you get the idea Ok so I decide to update at windows (although I'm sure in the past its made things worse) Update the 'critical updates' and wow I got another error and then my machine won't boot into xp at all.

Here's My Deal :
A big thanks to those who post here...I've had my system for over a year and havn't really had to post here much...anyway's I think digi has a great product. I think the problems with my setup are totally related to XP. I realize I'm running an older machine and asking it to do a lot but xp won't even work right on its own.
XP SUCKS on my machine anyway, It's not worth my time to even bother to attempt reinstalling it. I'm going back to 98 where I don't have to fight with a computer to make music. Rock Lives

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Sorry to hear about all of your problems with XP.

So far for me it is running great.

I wish that I could help you.

Check the system performance thread, and the Best system thread. There is alot of great info there.

You might also want to do a search on Widows XP.

Good luck.

Jotown:)

Just to play devil's advocate here- the vast majority of people are using XP just fine, myself included. So maybe XP is not the junk here... could be an ID ten T error....

Just playin with ya. XP PTLE works very well on my P3 750 so it's not the OS or the slow computer.

Check your hardware against XP's Hardware Compatibility List (it's a long list): ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/whq...inXPHCLx86.txt

Your video card and/or NIC may be suspect. An easy thing to do is remove the NIC and see if you get the same problems.

Why would you blame Windows XP?? It's obvious that a piece of hardware you're using is conflicting. My old computer (5 months ago) had an ASUS AV7-133, Maxtor HD, AMD 1.3 T-Bird, 512mb RAM, Nvidia Geforce 2MX and a Soundbalster clone. Very similar to your computer. Windows XP worked great. So to get you started, you can rule out your processor, motherboard, HD, Soundbaster and RAM (you have enuff). Did you install all the proper drivers? Your motherboard requires a VIA 4 in 1 driver pack GET IT HERE (sorry if this is preschool to you). For the rest you'll have to visit the devices webpage to see if it works with XP.

DRIVERS DRIVERS DRIVERS.

there's nothing wrong with your nic or your video card. i'm sure of this.

we know there's no hardware conflict because everything worked in win98.

DRIVERS DRIVERS DRIVERS. do you have ALL THE LATEST DRIVERS for your:

motherboard's chipset
hard drive controller (if applicable)
video card
sound card

visit www.viatech.com for via 4in1's, www.creativelabs.com for the sblive, www.ati.com for the vid card drivers. if your motherboard has a promise or highpoint raid controller, go to www.promise.com or www.highpoint-tech.com for their respective drivers.

ALSO, i see you have an hp cd-writer. i'm guessing that it came with roxio's easy cd-creator. certain versions or that program have been known to blow up windows 2k and xp. go to www.roxio.com and make sure you have the latest version for your os. or better yet, get nero.
