Default Monitoring and Playback of MIDI through synth

I use PTLE on a PC with the digi 001 and use the Alesis QS 8.1 as controller and synth.

I have MIDI IN/OUT connected to the 001. AUDIO out from the QS 8.1 connected to inputs 3/4 on the 001.

The keyboard sends and receives the MIDI but I cannot hear the audio during recording or during playback unless I have a direct connection to the monitors (Monitor Mode on)In that case I only hear the MIDI tracks.

How do I configure the MIDI to use the analog inputs from the synth?

Help!,Thanks

I am afraid I dont have my digi in front of me but in the pull down men's there are various monitoring options that you can select that will allow you to monitor your audio through the Digi. If that doesnt work click the record buttons on the Audio channels and you should get Audio. Are you currently seeing any meter activity on the Audio channels you have selected?. Did you select which Audio inputs are being used on the input of each Channel. Try this and tell me if this fixes the problem. It should.

Just a few things to try, okay.
Monitor mode is on when the button is pushed
in. Did you turn up the volume? Do you have
the volume on the keyboard turned up? (I'm
not trying to be insulting here. It's just
that the simplest things can cause the
biggest problems.) Is the audio from the 001
to your monitors coming from the Monitor Out
outputs (this would only let you hear midi)?
To hear audio, your monitors should be
connected to the Main Outputs.

Did you set up your mix window routing
correctly?
I inserted an Aux fader with the input set to
Anlg3-4 and the output set to A1S/PDIF before
I could hear midi, and I really think
that may be the problem you're having.

Hope this helps.

leofreq,

Since you are getting MIDI into Pro Tools, check that your audio connections are correct by (the computer does not even need to be turned on for this test):
-Audio Outputs of the Alesis into inputs 3/4 of the Digi001
-Assuming you are using self-powered monitors, connect then to the Monitor Outputs of the Digi001 I/O box.
-Depress the Monitor mode switch
-Turn up the volume and you should hear your synth through the speakers.

Assuming the above works, press the monitor mode button (so it is in the "out" position) and go ahead and launch Pro Tools LE. Since you want to record MIDI data while monitoring the audio output of your synth:
1-Open a session
2-Create a Stereo Aux track and set its inputs to Analog 3/4
3-Create a MIDI track and rec-enable the track
4-Raise the fader on the Aux track to adjust the volume of your synth.

In this scenario, the Aux track is acting as a live monitor in Pro Tools, so only MIDI data will be recorded.

Thanks for your replys,

The use of an aux track makes sense. I was making due with a regular audio track to monitor the synth, but the fact that it would actually record made it a hassle.

I really appreciate your help!
peace
