Studio Monitors
What would be a good set of studio monitors for a budget of around £500 (so that'd be about $850-$900)
They would be for home studio work, mostly rock music and electronica i imagine. I've been looking into it a bit but don't really know where to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, im using an Mbox2. Will speakers not be as good thru this as opposed to an 002 say? |

Re: Studio Monitors
Studio Monitors are a highly personal choice. I use KRK V-8's, which are in about the price range you indicated. Love 'em. Some people hate 'em. Everyone told me to try the Mackie's. I hated them.
Output sound quality from the MBox2 should about the same as the 002.

Re: Studio Monitors
I concur with soundsurfr. Very personal choice. This comes down to figuring out which boxes will translate your mixes to the world at large the best. On your shopping trip(s), take some material along with which you are familiar and which you have heard in as many forms (CD, LP, radio, TV?) as possible. Take stuff that is similar to what you'll be doing AND some that's dissimilar. Monitor at low and high levels, taking frequent breaks to clear your mind and ears.
I also got V8s. I really wanted to like the Blue Sky systems, but in the environment where I demoed them I thought they were awful, twice. The form factor would have worked much better for me, but... I also liked the Event boxes as well, just picked the others.

Re: Studio Monitors
I'm a big fan of my Dynaudio BM5a's which can be had for around $900 if you search around. I've also heard a lot of good things about the JBL LSR4326P's ($1150), and 4328P's ($1400).
But yeah, listening to as many monitors as you can and buying what sounds best to you is the ticket. For what it's worth, I recently got the RME ADI-2 to go along with my MBox2, and the difference in sound is incredible. So a decent DAC is well worth the money when using nice monitors. But then again, that's an extra $600, and that's cheap considering a Rosetta 200 will cost you a grand more than the RME. |

Re: Studio Monitors
I just recently did what you are doing and ended up with the JBL LSR4328's. For the money I think they are a good investment, but that's just my opinion. Take some CD's you are intimate with you and listen to a few choices. If you can find a place with a "good room" that would let you evaluate without the influence of the space, that would be ideal.
Good luck and let us know what you end up with. Rick |

Re: Studio Monitors
I have the blue skye media monitors and absolutely love them. really. i am a fan of mixing with a sub though (turned low), so that's something to consider.
