Anybody knows KEF Q 300 Speakers
just test a new near-field speaker and I never heard something equal,
Kef are normally selling this speaker as surround rear. Point source and coincidence are the main facts. Since long time a technology with a big surprise, huge difference to coaxial and all the other systems. You will hear things you never heard before. Sweet spot ?? .... not necessary any more. point source is the answer, you will recognize rooms or reverbs, Lexicon or Convolution, Eventide or plates. You hear it so clear. three-dimensional like no other speaker. And the incredible fact, so cheap check it out. http://www.kef.com/gb/loudspeakers/q...2010/bookshelf

Re: Anybody knows KEF Q 300 Speakers
I had some KEF 104/2 speakers and they were very good hifi speakers and could have been used a main studio monitors, I am sure these are very good but most people tend to use nearfields that are designed for studio use rather than hifi use. There are exceptions to this and if you are happy with those then use them.

Re: Anybody knows KEF Q 300 Speakers
Hi Gary,
thanks for your reply. 104/2 was build more then 20 years ago, right ? I’m sure there is a huge difference to the Q 300, because the 104/2 seems to be a complete other system, they are not coincidence speakers. They have 37 kg. Just saw a picture at the KEF „museum“ If you have the possibility to hear the Q 300 you will be surprised. A friend of mine has build coincidence near fields for the studio scene here in Austria, bevor the Q300 came out, about 15 pairs. Now with KEF we get nearly the same technic and sound for about 500 $ (pair) we did the A/B test and there are only some tuning differences. The analyzing curve is very close to linear. In my studio I have, since they came out, Genelec 1032 and a pair of NS10. Never bevor I used a HiFi box in my studio We was discussing a lot about the difference from Studio - HiFi speaker. But can you tell me which exceptions you mean ? What’s the difference for you ? We found that all the KrKs and Adams and Dynaudios out there is all not useable. I mean HiFi clients today have the better speakers then studio clients. because they have more money. But I mean not the pro studios, no the pseudo studios with little money. I’m very happy with them and when my current project is done, I will use them also for mixing.

Re: Anybody knows KEF Q 300 Speakers
I’m talking about bad sounding speakers, low end products to feed the low end
price range. speakers build to feed the mob with „studio speakers“ If you look behind the age of digital recording, when studio owners bought studio speakers or anything else, they had to spend much money. When I bought my Genelec 1032 about 15 years ago, it was a huge investment for me....and this speaker was far away to be a high class studio speaker. Not bad, even today, but far away from high end. Then years later we had a legion of different brands on the market for „studio speaker“ ....but today !! you are a sound designer you know what I’m talking about. ....but, if you have time and fun to do it, test the Q 300 of KEF. You will have a lot of fun and you will be really, really surprised. I was !!!

Re: Anybody knows KEF Q 300 Speakers
The 104/2 may be 20 years old but they still sound good, the Q range has been around for quite some time too and as said I am sure they sound fine, I used to have tannoy's for many years and the Q design is similar.
Personally I switched to dynaudio around 15 years ago and have used them since as I know where I am with them. I currently have a set of BM10's with a 12 inch sub.

Re: Anybody knows KEF Q 300 Speakers
Of course Gary, I’m sure they sound good. They started a long time ago to develop the Q system. Had the possibility to hear the XQ series yesterday,
not bad, but far away from the Q300..... and cost nearly the triple price. In the middle of the 90s Tanoy came out with affordable monitors for amateur and semipro studios.I bought and I loved them.....they was really ugly in my eyes, but it was a studio monitor and there was no choice for this money at this times. Just saw at there web site, they still selling this series. Reveal. Don’t know this new ones, also today they are not ugly anymore ....But I haven’t seen a coincidence system on the Tanoy product line... yes, for their VQ series they use a coherent "point source“ technology. It’s a „live" system. All this speakers out there are not comparable with the new Q from Kef. Even the generation bevor Q 300, the Q 30 is far away, (my opinion) but comparable. I mean. there are not many coincidence speaker on the market, like coincidentspeaker.com for example. That’s HiFi really expensive. But not like a Nautilus :)

Re: Anybody knows KEF Q 300 Speakers
Sadly my 104/2's went on the bonfire as I stored them in the shed for too long and the bass drivers disintegrated, I still have the mid and top units and may use them some day.
I seem to recall that I tried the first generation of the Q ser around 15 years ago to get some smaller hi-fi speakers but they were no where near as good as the 104/2's so I didn't change them. As for the tannoy's my London facility used the DMT ser in all our rooms and we had 12's 10's and 8's with various sub bass units.
