Can my laptop support a usb interface with protools?
Hey there, I'm looking into purchasing a usb interface for the main purpose of recording and messing around with all the music my band and myself have written. I've been looking at a bunch of options but am leaning towards this one.
http://www.amazon.com/Avid-Pro-Tools-Duet/dp/B00NI3VAW8 I'm just wondering if my laptop would be able to run everything properly. It's a Sony vaio pc. I did a SANDRA report. Here it is. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Re: Can my laptop support a usb interface with protools?
It would *probably* be good. Here are the requirements for PT 12:http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...m-Requirements
It specifies an Intel i5, which your AMD processor is comparable to. However, it is generally accepted that Intel works better with Pro Tools than AMD. That's not to say it won't work. You should probably look into getting a separate external hard drive to record to (at least 7200RPM), as recording to the system drive can cause issues (especially where yours is 5400RPM). That said, I think the Duet is probably a very nice interface (on sale at Sweetwater for $799), but for that money you could get an 8 input interface that could record each drum to a separate channel for a lot less. I'm happy with my Focusrite 18i20, and Motu and Presonus, among others, also make great interfaces. Beyond that, the best bang for buck entrance into Pro Tools is the Eleven Rack, especially if you're a guitarist! Just some food for thought. Joel

Re: Can my laptop support a usb interface with protools?
Keo627,
For any other DAW, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Roland's Studio Capture (SC), especially at Sweetwater's newly discounted price - http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/UA1610. It has a lot of convenience and performance features that you (like my son) will likely find quite useful now and in the future. (Expandable to 32 inputs [24 preamps] with a second unit, 4 low latency mixers/unit for tracking, etc.). You can download lots of info, including the comprehensive owner's manual, from Roland's website. But, like most/all of PT's PC (ASIO) third party interfaces (except possibly those from RME) some workarounds are required to configure it (and PT) successfully. Here are my attempts at documenting those workarounds – http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=368422. The good news is that if you’re willing to do the workarounds when necessary, you’ll likely get good performance from the SC with Pro Tools. Unlike some other interfaces (including AVIDs!), PT can compensate for its Record Latency (round trip latency) quite accurately - as shown at http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?p...21#post2268821. The first post in that thread shows similar measurements of my Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 with one of their earlier beta drivers. It sounds like their latest beta driver has even more problems than that version did - http://duc.avid.com/showpost.php?p=2281007&postcount=30. Unfortunately I really can’t comment on the SC’s “stability” with PT because my son started using Reason for recording whenever possible (he bounces the recorded tracks to PT for mixing). Many/all of the earlier problems that prevented him from using the SC with PT (which he really wanted to do since he was using PT at school) may have been the result of not having adequate workaround procedures. Now however, he is having good luck using the SC with PT for relatively short tracking sessions. Here’s another thread on showing others’ experiences with the SC though - http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t...ghlight=Roland. The Eleven Rack is a really nice (and reasonably priced) interface that doesn’t require the workarounds, but I doubt that PT can compensate for its record latency properly and it has only one mic preamp. Good luck and please share your experiences, so others can benefit from them! Amack Quote:
