p popping clean up
I have some vocal tracks that have plosive p's, b's and t's in them and I want to clean them up on the individual tracks rather than in the final stereo mix if I can. I use Pro Tools M-Powered 7.1 for recording and mixing and Sound Forge 5 for mastering. In Sound Forge there is a preset for this kind of thing under their multiband dynamics tool. I know that I could accomplish the same thing on the vocal tracks along in Pro Tools but I don't know what settings to use on the RTAS compressor to get what I want, which is a vocal track free of plosives. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

Re: p popping clean up
1. careful mic positioning
2. use a Popper Stopper 3. For any plosives that STILL get recorded: Select the pop only, audiosuite a high-pass filter at about 320HZ.

Re: p popping clean up
Well, the first two are out as the musicians are gone but good advice for next time.
On the third one, I will try this and let you know how it works. Thanks for the tips. If anyone else has any sort of different advice on removing plosives from existing vocals on tracks, let me know. Mike |

Re: p popping clean up
i believe that what you want is a De-Esser.
my use of them has been somewhat limited, because i always use a dbx166xl compressor/limiter BEFORE the mic signal gets recorded by pro tools. so, although i am familiar with the application of a De-Esser and what it does, i don't have much experience using one. if i am wrong about this, then perhaps someone else would be able to chime in and provide support.

Re: p popping clean up
Use volume automation. View the track at sample level. You'll see the "p"s as spikes. While still at sample level, use the drawing tool to draw the volume down to 0 just covering the spikes. Adjust if needed to cover only the "P" sound. You don't need to cover the whole consonant, just the part that's distorting. It's a microsecond of time and shouldn't be noticed. I've used this many times and works fine for me.
