100ata which is faster for track count?
Anyone know if my gxp120gig ibm hd's, currently running on my firewire bus(oxford), would be faster if i place them internally on the ata100 bus?
Better track count for HD? thnx

would like to know that too...
My Maxtor IDE who cost just $120 lets me reach 32 tracks with nice edit density until it is , let us say, 60% full...It is inside my G4 800, running at 44k/24 bits with PT 5.1.1 Mix.

Re: 100ata which is faster for track count?
I've run more than 64 tracks using one firewire drive at 44.1. Lots of edits and no significant problems on my dual 1 ghz (quicksilver model) w/HD.
I always test new drives when I buy them by duplicating a 50MB file in the finder. Internal drives (on the ATA bus with the system drive) copy in about 4.5 seconds. Firewire drives copy in about 5 and a half seconds. So they are a little slower, but only by 20% or so. By way of comparison, when I first started testing on a G4 400 in 1999, a 27GB drive (at the time a big one!) took 12.6 seconds to copy. Even though it was slower, that drive could still record and play 24 tracks at 44.1 with no problems. Good luck, Jeff D. |

Re: 100ata which is faster for track count?
Haven't upgraded to XP yet, too lazy to reformat system drive for a clean install. But on 98se I get 24 tracks with aux buses & effects at 24bit.44.1 on a 30 gb Maxtor(7200 rpm)DM plus. No problems at mix down

Re: 100ata which is faster for track count?
Well, since there is no such thing as a true firewire drive, it makes sense, that drives will perform slightly better on the ata bus.

Re: 100ata which is faster for track count?
PacMan is right. Firewire drives are really a standard IDE drive connected to a firewire adapter sort-a-speak. Great item if you move sessions to different studios all the time or record with a labtop.

Re: 100ata which is faster for track count?
I don't understand this harddrive thing!! I have just switched my mix 24 setup over from a PC to a g4 800, I also transferred my seagate barracuda 80 ide drive into the mac as well. Now using the pc I could get about 64 tacks going with a pretty heavy edit density running fine! Now using the same harddrive in the mac I'm struggling with 32 track with hardly any editing at all.
WHATS UP WITH THAT? Anyone had this problem? |
