Default Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Error

I have searched and troubleshot for hours on this problem and can't find a solution.

When I start the program it goes through the loading until it gets to the "Loading Preferences" (The first or second one). Then it hangs for a long time, say three to five minutes, (during this time, I can operate other programs and all, but I get no response from PT.)

Finally, an error pops up, called:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!
Program : d:\Program files\digidesign\protools\protoolsle.exe

This application has requested runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I've tried reinstalling the 5.3.1 updater, I've tried to find the preferences file, but it must have moved in XP because I can't find it anywhere.
Please Help...
-Olaf

Oh, and when I click the OK box on the error, it closes PT and won't let me work, which is the main problem.

Then I don't have a clue. I had that sort of trouble with with a debugger on a compiler.

Compiler in simple terms is a peice of software that turns source code (written code) into machine code (software) that will run on a computer.

A debugger is software that watches what your code does and tells you about what it is doing, so that you can find the bugs in your code.

But since you don't know this isn't the problem.

What about security software like Norton, it can do the same stuff.

Did you ever have it working? Is this a new problem? What did you do to your computer before this happened the first time? What new software, hardware etc.?

I can't think of why this would happen...maybe a corupt file....

You said "updater", did you instal 5.1 first?
Are you running under XP?
Did you follow the install instructions exactly?

Ok I got the same problem and here is what I did.

1) I tried to set up a seperat user profile for PTLE.
2) I accepted the trial version of whatever it is that pops up and asks you to accept the trial version.

Resolution:
1) Delete all but -2- User profiles. Some XP bug.
2) Instal PTLE 5.3 under the profile you will be using to run it. (beats me, but PTLE seems to want it that way)
3) Hit cancle when the thing asks you to try the demo.

Don't know which one it was, and don't care, I'm just glad that it works now.

I also had this problem.

In the end I had to reinstall XP and then PT before any other misic apps.

I've tried those things and had no result. I've only one profile on the computer, and that's where I installed PT.
I don't have any norton or similar software.
I tried to system restore to a week ago when I was working with PTLE Fine, but no luck.
I tried reinstalling 5.31 from a newly downloaded version from the site. Next I'm going to reinstall XP then PTLE, but I'm furious that I should have to go through that.

Can anyone tell me where the PTLE preferences files are kept under XP? I'd like to toss them and start anew if possible, as that's where the scan is hanging.

This four day weekend has turned from one of four solid days of recording, to a day of recording and three of computer fighting. Doesn't seem like a fair ratio to me.

Thanks for all the help and sorry if my attitude isn't great, these problems have really got me in a funk.

Did you select cancel when the popup asks you to try...whatever it is?

If I select anything but cancle it hangs.

Also PTLE and Word Perfect don't play nicely together for some reason.

I would try re-downloading the installer befor scraping your hard drive. Maybe it's corupted?

thanks for your reply, but I'm not seeing that demo dialog at all. I don't have the opportunity to select Cancel.
I also don't have Wordperfect.
I have tried redownloading the installer, just in case. I've also tried reinstalling XP and PTLE from scratch, but to no avail.

I feel if I could find that preferences file it would be the solution, but it's not called anything I can find thorough search, and I don't know where else to look. That's where it gets hung up. I went back to my 5.1 install on the ME drive, and it gets through the preferences file checking in two or three seconds, but the XP install just gets hung up there.

I've pretty much given up, and I'm just going to have to wipe the whole drive and start from scratch.

You have no idea how much this ticks me off.
I've started listening to old Monty Python records just to keep my temper in check.
