Which post Sierra OS for latest Pro Tools?
I've been using Sierra on my main Mac Pro 5,1 tower for a few years now. It's got upgraded cores, graphics card, and 48gb RAM. Running an HDX card. I've used PT 2019.6 without any real hiccups. It gets beat 7 days a week with full bands and lots of midi stuff too.
Since I'm paying hundreds/thousands for PT each year, I figure I might as well build a new test drive with the latest PT. I haven't downloaded any of this years updates. I'm so blissfully out of the loop, I have no idea which newer Mac OS is good/dodgy. I know everyone's experience is diff. But if anyone has any thoughts post Sierra, let me know. I know Big Sur (if it's even out) is not a good option. But maybe Catalina or Mojave will be ok. It'd be nice to update Logic etc on my main box... which I can't do since I'm still on Sierra.

Re: Which post Sierra OS for latest Pro Tools?
Thanks JFreak. I guess I'll put that one on spare SSD and see what happens. Funny thing is, I don't even really care so much about the new features. Except for the SDII development, which would help when clients ask to work on OLD sessions. It happens monthly.

If for some reason Catalina does not work for you, consider High Sierra instead of Mojave. In here Mojave made things sluggish.

I'm with Janne, that Catalina feels very solid and snappy.
Just beware catalina and later needs "Metal capable" graphics, though I can't really tell you what that means. SDII support came with 2020.9.1, or at least PT opens SDII sessions and converts audio automatically to wav. Not a minute too soon.

Re: Which post Sierra OS for latest Pro Tools?
The Avid compatibility documents show that only one Metal compatible GPU is supported for that computer , which, as others mentioned, would be required if you want to go above High Sierra. Keep in mind that some graphics cards require power connections and so does the HDX card.
Also be aware that your 5.1 Mac Pro may require firmware updates to upgrade to newer OS's, and there are specific steps required to do that, for example installing High Sierra before going to Mojave if I remember correctly. Check out the instructions and useful info here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads...hread.2142418/ Mojave is the last Apple supported OS on the 5.1 Mac Pros.

Re: Which post Sierra OS for latest Pro Tools?
I guess I lucked out in the Metal Dept. [insert Bevis saying "haha Metal"]. I just upgraded with an external power supply and graphics card last year. And in my system report it says "Metal: compatible". I've no idea exactly what model it is.
So Mojave is last "supported". But have folks used Catalina on a 5,1 and PT2020? I don't do video work of any sort. once every 2 or 5 years someone does some sound for a Quicktime movie.
