Default Driver updates,yes or no?

Good morning. My first question is about automatic driver updates. Are they necessary? Windows lets you choose when and if you want to update and I should have just left it at that. instead I ignorantly clicked on an auto update website and it downloaded it's software to my pc. I can't seem to remove it and I can have a Pro tools session open and BLAM the driver updater pops up on my screen and interrupts my work flow! Second, How should I go about finding the driver updates that are necessary to keep my recording programs up to date and choose only those. It seems to me that if I let Windows choose when and what to download I may be getting stuff that might interfere with Pro tools operations.
Pro tools 9, Windows 7,32bit. Thanks.

Well, first thing to do is get rid of that driver update software It SHOULD show up on the list if you go to Control Panel(Category view)>Uninstall a Program. If it doesn't show up, open Start>All Programs and find it on that list and see if it has an uninstall option with it. You can also open Services and locate that "service", hit STOP Service, and change its properties to Disabled. Last ditch method, restore the system drive from a drive image.

My 2 cents only, but I rarely update any driver unless I have an issue(and think a driver update might help). I also never update anything without first saving a drive image. Never do an "Express Install" on anything as it will likely install extra crap you don't want or need, as well as change your home page and your default search engine to BING

After you've done everything Dave said take a trip through the Windows Registry with CCleaner and remove any remaining bits and bobs of the update. But generally it's a Good Thing to never enable automatic update for anything. To my mind updates are only necessary if you're having issues. And always make a backup (or restore point for Windows users) before doing an update. Actually periodic full backups are another Good Thing as they can save your bacon when a restore point can't. Windows is supposed to create it's own restore points before doing certain things but I wouldn't depend on that.

Thanks Dave. I'll see if I can get rid of the updater software by following your instructions today. I will cease doing any updates unless, as you say, I suspect I have a problem. There are no updates to Pro tools 9 and I don't expect any however, shouldn't I do updates for other programs associated with PT's like ezdrummer?

Just turn off the updates. That doesnt include your programs anyway. Only windows and drivers updates will be turned off I believe.

NEVER install drivers from any site that isn't that of the hardware or OS developer!
