Default Thinking of a Trackball for PT?

Been using a Mighty Mouse for a while and never tried a trackball - which seems weird to use?

But with a mouse and the key commands and being new to PT I find the smart tool selections (TCE, Object moving etc) very fiddly..

Would a Trackball speed things up a little?

I see for something like a Kensington Expert Mouse Pro that it has 6 buttons up top, can these be assigned to anything? ie: quick smart tool changing etc and maybe other things that I havent thought of??

Also as an aside, could I use and set up the Trackball with another program like Ableton (use this alot for composing) along side Protools? (I normally have both open at the same time)

Thanks

I have been using Kensington Trackballs for close to 10 years and love them. I started with them to sooth carpal issues and never looked back. I feel it makes me much faster for dialog/FX editing. I use the buttons for common things (in my world) like zoom in/out, Smart Tool, ect. The scroll ring (4 button Expert Mouse) scrolls edit window tracks up and down. Very intuitive.

You can make button presets for each application, not sure how it reacts if both are open but it should work as you want.

I've got a Kensington Trackball and I love it.
I have the upper left button to select between slip, grid, spot, & shuffle modes.
My upper right button is set to select the different tools (selector, trim, pencil, multi, etc.)
The trackball saved my wrist from carpel tunnel syndrome.

Don't forget to try a tablet.

I use a Wacom Bamboo Fun. I find it much better than a mouse or trackball:

+1 TABLET

The pen is mightier than the mouse, or ball.

For the record, I use a tablet/pen with a mouse just to the right of that. My day is probably 90% pen, but 10% of the time a mouse is useful.

Agreed, the intuous line comes with a wireless 5 button mouse that works on the tablet surface, best of both worlds. You can assign shortcuts to any of the mouse buttons.
