Default EWQL + Kompakt for me...?

Hey all,

I've been looking at the EastWest Silver library as a way to have some entry-level film composition options.

Entry-level in that I can't justify great spending on this, although I have a classical background and know how to orchestrate.

I'm fine with the 16bit, and (at least for now), the lack of ambience control. Mostly doing faux hollywood style orchestrations for personal projects.

I'm running HD3 PT 6.9 on OS 10.3.9 with 3gig of RAM in a Dual 2gig G5 (PPC) and a large FW800 drive.

Will that work with Kompakt as RTAS (running w/ large buffer, no ADC)?

I've read a lot of problems, but I don't know if it's because the Platinum Libraries are much more intense, etc.

Anyone with this setup working properly?

Thanks,

- p

the silver is only 16 bit so the load is minimal but you will need to put a ton of RAM in there. and load the libraries to a separate drive

Hey,

Thanks for the input. Yes, I was hoping the smaller bit-size would help with performance.

As far as your comment on RAM, I was under the impression that Panther and PT6 it can only take advantage of around 3gig of RAM. Unless you're talking about running Kontakt as a separate app, which I'd like to avoid if possible.

Anyone able to confirm that...?

I dont know where you got that size limitation
but when you start loading VI's it starts sucking up RAM
I know users with 8 gigs in the G5 and still seem low at times
and I'm only referring to RTAS VI's

Also you should take advantage of the NI DFD option to keep RAM consumption low, and the libraries on there own drive

the original poster is quite right.

the size limitation comes from the Computer. 32 bit Applications will only utilize so much RAM. if you have 8 GIG of RAM and only PT open, you will not usee all 8 GIGS.

from Jon Connolly:
Quote:
Pro Tools will currently use up to 2 gigs (give or take) and the OS will need a constantly dynamic amount which, in 10.4.9, is noticably more than older OS X versions. While a gig or a gig and a half was adequate for Pro Tools and the Mac OS in the past, I have found that to no longer be the case. All of my systems are 2 gig minimum, and most are at 3.5 gig or 4 gigs.

...

Plug-ins, VI's including samplers running as plug-ins are included in the Pro Tools RAM total and are not considered separate apps. On the other hand, applications like Reason, Live, Soundminer, etc. are separate apps and their RAM usage is not part of the Pro Tools sum in which case more than 4 gigs might help.

Two cents,

use FW 800 drives with NO FW 400's attached (throtlles down the bus).

i have had good luck with EWQLSO. in fact i am using it righ now. happy with it. done some great stuff with it. but i am expanding beyond it.......(to Vienna and Sonic Implants...on another CPU)

i do run into issues because i make BIG arrangements. the application bogs down, Saving becomes a pain because it takes so long -- the autosave makes everything stop. but note, this is just when i use huge amounts of Sample VI's. but it doesn't crash and i can run afair amount. or print, de-activate, and move on.

as a starter for your music, i think it will be great. and then you'll want other things fro other flavors. each library has it strengths and weaknesses. The EWQLSO is good, but can be a tad bright, aggressive sounding and a tad big..... nothing is perfect, expect the real thing in the right circumstances.

i say go for it.

Hey thanks for the responses... Hey Tom, I'm the guy that emailed you.

That's a good question NuBus. DFD seems like a strong idea for making that all work properly.

I own 7, but don't want to deal with upgrading *all* my plugs for this new tool if I don't have to.

Anyone know if DFD is stable in 6.9?

Thanks for the link. Are you saying this is the one that works well with 6.9?

Thanks,
