Default 192 clipping??

I mixed a track the other night and was mastering it in pro tools which I normally do. I know you guys are going to shout at me for this but I was trying to get it as loud as a commercial CD. The strange thing was my 192 was showing the rid LED on the 1-2 output but in Pro Tools none of my meters were clipping?? Not pre or post fader. Also I couldn't hear any clipping. I was using slate FG-X as my final limiter and was pushing between 9-10 RMS on the slate meters and my ceiling was set to -0.1. Do the 192's show clipping just before clipping takes place. On my Allen and Heath qu-16 the clip light comes on a few db's before clipping actually happens. Hopefully someone can shed a little light in the :)

Not the final answer, but an educated guess. The red light MIGHT indicate that you have run out of headroom, but not actually clipping(seeing the same on my HD IO main outputs. Then, you (and me) might need to run the calibration as well.

I have read the manual about this calibration thing but I was not clear what to do and why. Maybe someone here can educate me a bit and explain in at why you have to do it. I would hVe thought what ever signal Pro Tools is showing on the screen should be the same signal the 192 is showing

Remember that the meters on the screen are reading software levels, while the meters on the 192 are reading analog before the A>D and after the D>A conversion(as far as I know anyway). In any case, my master track is NOT in the red, but my HD outputs might still hit red on peaks. Did you check youtube for a video on calibration? My manual explains it in great detail, but there's too much to post here, and I have yet to dive in(still not convinced it really matters).

thats a good video about that....I have seen it, and the Manual is pretty clear about the procedure.

Also yes Dave is right AGAIN. headroom and not clipping. Manual says PT window shows actual clipping....Let me see if I can post that page.
