adjusting gain
could someone simply explain what to do with the gain adjustment once the peak value is acquired? for instance, if I get a peak of -4.0 do I want to djust gain at +4.0 to arrive at 0.0 db ????

Dead right! -4db means that you level is 4 dbs below 'normalised' level, or 0db, so +4db in your example would bring it to 0dbs.
