For experts - Spectrasonics Trilogy/ Atmosphere crashing PT

Hi all,

Was hoping someone might have had experience with weird crashes when either Atmosphere or Trilogy plug in is opened.

The plugins have been working fine with OS X10.4.8 on a Dual G5 2.5 PPC machine running PT 7.2cs3 for a while now.

All of a sudden opening up either of the plugins in even a new, clean sequence will crash protools (no error message generated).

I did all the standard troubleshooting deleting all prefs, digidatabases, checked drive directory damage, etc. Even uninstalled and reinstalled Protools as well as Trilogy and Atmosphere. Even booted from an archived known good clone of the build - Still crashing.

Previously a reinstall of Protools seemed to fix these issues for about a month, now that no longer seems to work.

Spectrasonics is stumped so I'm hoping someone out there has been able to figure this out.

Any info appreciated as rebuilding from scratch will be a nightmare.

I think the answer is simple. check the spectrasonics web site - I don't think those 2 plugins are compatible with new macs yet.

G5 PPC 2.5 is a 2 year old+ machine. Nothing new about this hardware.

I am using these plugs daily on a G5 2.7DP OS 10.4.9

You should not have issues.

Check your buffer. Check your ram. Check your hard drive that your files stream from. In fact, you may want to move your sample data to another drive just to see if the drive could be on the edge of its life. Hope this helps.

its a 2 year old dual processor 2.5ghz G5 tower. Not an Intel Mac.
Spectrasonics is supposed to be releasing an Intel Mac version this fall.

ran mem test on the ram - came up clean. Deleted DS_store files.

tried the .dat sample files from other drives - still crashing.

zapped all caches, even tried newer version of PT 7.3cs3, clean install of PT 7.2CS3


This is driving me crazy and I'm good at troubleshooting.

Any suggestions on buffer settings, I have tried multiple settings already, just hope I overlooked something simple.

Sooner or later, if you continue to have problems after trying all suggestions, I'd recommend a complete wipe of your system hard drive, and re-installing everything from scratch (don't put trust in a clone from the past - you could be re-experiencing an old problem). Once in a great while, you can run into some weird corruption that screws everything up. Fixing it can be very difficult.

If a complete re-install doesn't fix things, then you might want to try a different computer. Motherboards can develop subtle, hard-to-track-down-and-identify problems that can cause a lot of difficulty. Things can largely appear to work, but weird problems occur. I've had this experience myself.

One other consideration... Are these problems occurring right from the start of a new session, or do they occur on large sessions with lots of other plug-ins instanciated? If the latter is the case, you could be exceeding your CPU resources.

BTW, the memory test does not always catch all problems. Substituting other RAM is an option, but the problem could also be a funky socket (and that would mean a MOBO replacement).

Do the instruments open up as stand alones? Are you running the latest versions of Trilogy/Atmosphere?

Pref's/DigiSetup/databases to the trash? Have you? Should you? Yes! You could have a corrupt plugin in the cache.. it happens.
